Opting for bangs is a major decision, and it’s one that often leaves clients asking their stylists a lot of questions when they bring in inspiration photos. This hairstyle can completely transform your appearance in an instant. Plus, it’s quite the commitment—bangs take nearly a year to grow out fully!

Thankfully, experts assure that when done correctly, bangs can suit any hair type, whether it’s short, thin, curly, or layered. Still feeling a little anxious about making the cut? Curtain bangs could be the perfect option for you. This flattering style tapers rather than cutting bluntly, parting in the middle to frame your forehead, and they’re much easier to grow out.

What exactly are curtain bangs?

“Curtain bangs are bangs that split in the center and frame the face like a theater curtain being pulled back,” explains Paul Labrecque, creative director and master stylist at Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa.

Typically, the middle of the bangs is the shortest, gradually lengthening toward the sides, says Dani Everson, owner of Clementine’s Salon and founder of SkinForYou. This look has been sported by celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Dakota Johnson, Nicole Richie, Halle Berry, and Ariana Grande.

Who suits curtain bangs?

Bangs often get a bad reputation for being tricky to style and maintain. However, our experts believe otherwise, saying curtain bangs, in particular, are highly versatile.

While they’re especially flattering on those with oval or rectangular face shapes, curtain bangs can suit nearly anyone, says Everson. There are just two small exceptions: people with more prominent noses may find longer, side-swept bangs more flattering, according to Labrecque. And if you have a cowlick, opting for a heavier, longer curtain bang can help control it, adds Everson.

How are curtain bangs cut?

Ready to take the plunge? Reach out to your stylist! While cutting bangs yourself might seem tempting, achieving the desired look without professional experience can be quite difficult. A mistake, particularly cutting them too short, can be hard to fix.

Once in the salon chair, your stylist will likely section out the bangs and use either scissors or a razor to create the signature tapered effect, with the shortest part in the center and longer pieces on the sides. This is often done using a technique called “slide cutting,” explains Labrecque. “Slide cutting involves angling the scissors behind the hand and pulling from a shorter point to a longer one, giving the bangs a soft, feathered finish rather than a harsh, blunt edge.”

How do you style curtain bangs?

Styling curtain bangs is easiest with a blowdryer and a medium-barrel round brush, says Everson. Start by blow drying the bangs away from your face. While you can begin with damp or dry hair, starting with damp hair helps the style hold better. Once dry, use pomade or dry texturizing spray to set the shape, and finish with a light mist of hairspray.

How to style curtain bangs with a curling iron

If you’re more comfortable using a curling iron, you can also style your curtain bangs with this tool. Lightly clamp each side of the bangs with the curling iron, twist toward your face, hold for a few seconds, then release for a soft, face-framing effect.

How to style curtain bangs with a flat iron

For a sleeker, more polished look, you can use a flat iron. Hold each section of your bangs upward and clamp the flat iron horizontally, twisting your wrist away from your face. Repeat the process on the other side for a smooth finish.

How to style curtain bangs without heat

If your hair is color-treated or prone to split ends, you might be looking for a no-heat styling option. Good news—it’s possible to style curtain bangs without using hot tools. All you need are rollers and some patience to let your hair air-dry, ideally overnight. Simply wrap your bangs around a roller (size depending on your hair type and desired curl), secure with a clip, and let them dry naturally. Once dry, unroll for effortless, heat-free styling.
